Ken and his mother went to see his father off on the ‘Empress of Britain’ and met the Maori Battalion. Ken discusses the depression and farming practices he adopted and his views on farming. Roland talks of his family history and settlement at Bayswater on their 1000 acre farm called Studleigh. Mattie’s family lived at Hakataramea until getting a balloted farm at Beaumont around 1915. Beaumont was a thriving community until the railway closed.
